Maggie Macdonald

Margaret, or Maggie Macdonald as she is known, joined the Fol-de-Rols in the mid 1960’s as the soprano.

Like all other “Fols” members, she could sing, dance, act and had a charming personality, which fitted in well with the Fols company.

Born in Scotland, Maggie studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & College of Drama in Glasgow. She sang on the BBC in Children’s Hour from the age of 12 and also broadcasted with the Scottish comedians Stanley Baxter and Jimmy Logan, doing weekly shows for three years.

Principal Girl

She played Principal Girl in pantomime opposite Pat Kirkwood, Terry Scott, Dickie Valentine and also Aladdin and worked for all the number one pantomime producers. These included Tom Arnold, Emile Littler, Harold Fielding, Jack Hylton and Jimmy Perry.

She was a regular broadcaster and has appeared in various TV shows as well as touring Canada and the United States coast to coast as soprano and comedy feed with Jimmy Logan, with whom she appeared at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

Maggie did many seasons with the “Fols” in the 1960’s including Scottish tours and summer seasons at Worthing and Eastbourne.

Lady in Red

My favourite memory of her is at the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne in 1966 when she entered the stage in a “Fols” opening, dressed in red net, and sang “staffordshire Clocks” with the dancers as the figures on the three clocks: it was charming.

Maggie became Mrs Peter Felgate in 1969 and they now live in a delightful house in Willingdon, Eastbourne. She is the “hostess with the mostest” – an invite for tea or coffee at the home is accompanied by a groaning table of sandwiches, home-made cakes and scones, cream, jam and biscuits. True Scottish hospittality!
